Greetings to all in the name of Jesus.
One of the things I look forward to is the third Sunday of each month. Don’t misunderstand. Each Sunday has its own special appeal. Its just that on the third Sunday I am privileged to facilitate a conversation with newcomers to Hillside. The standard fare each session includes such things as introductions all around, how folks heard about Hillside, how long have they been attending, how far are they driving to get here, the background on the Evangelical Free Church and Hillside’s history, what we do and why, and what we don’t do and why. What one can never prepare for, however, are the questions that arise from those in attendance.
…daily submit and surrender to the person and power of the Holy Spirit.
At a recent session, the question “What do you expect from me” was presented. I froze. Where was my trusted sidekick at these sessions, fellow Elder Jeff Clark? Surely he would jump in and take this one. But Jeff was elsewhere that morning. I was on my own. As I looked up from staring at the floor all I could see were twenty sets of eyes waiting with anticipation for the answer.
Seconds passed but it felt like an hour. Initial thoughts went to my Pharisaical checklist comprised of: attend church every Sunday; be in a community group; attend every womens’ and mens’ Bible study offered; volunteer in the nursery; be a greeter; and never complain about anything!
What came out of my mouth, however, was “Nothing”. After a deep breath, words to this effect emerged. Nothing, except what Jesus expects of me; to daily submit and surrender to the person and power of the Holy Spirit.
Realizing and claiming that the same Spirit that gave life to a dead and buried Jesus now lives within me as well as each and every believer in Jesus has changed how I think about and do life. I hate to lose, at anything. But Jesus Changes Everything. As a Christian, I now choose to win by losing.
Growing in His grace,
Ralph Huber and your Elder Team
