God’s Truth is Our Weapon in Spiritual Warfare

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a lion, looking for someone to devour.”
1 Peter 5:8

There’s nothing that the enemy of our souls wants more than to destroy us, make us ineffective Christians, isolate, confuse, and leave us exhausted and weary. His fiery darts come in many different shapes and sizes: the distraction of busyness, the twisting of truth, pain, condemnation, division, shame, and chaos, to name a few. But his tactics all have one common thread: LIES! The father of lies has an arsenal of them and he wields them relentlessly. The only way to combat them is with Truth – the unwavering, unchanging, unfailing Word of God! We MUST be armed with Truth to recognize the lies as they come, and to battle them back to the gates of Hell from whence they came.

How do we arm ourselves? “Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night.” (Joshua 1:8) Even if it’s one verse a day, study it. Put it on a notecard: rehearse it, memorize it, pray it! Small deposits accumulate over time. “Let the Word of God dwell in you richly.” (Col 3:16), and at the proper time, by the power of the Holy Spirit, those verses will be called to mind, to arm you, protect you, guide you, comfort you, convict you. Jesus himself relied on the Word when He was tempted by the devil in the wilderness (Matt 4:1-11/ Luke 4:1-13). As Spurgeon wrote, “Jesus selected the best weapon. What was best for Him IS best for you.”
