BREAD OF LIFE

hillside Devotionals, Hillside Women

In the Old Testament, bread played an important role in Israel’s worship of God. The Bread of the Presence in the temple symbolized the covenant between God and His people, and the twelve loaves (one for each tribe) was a constant reminder that God sustained Israel, just as He had sustained them in the wilderness with heavenly manna. Jesus, born in Bethlehem which means “house of bread”, when talking to the people in John 6, made the connection for them between the manna of the wilderness years, and Himself. “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever.” Jesus is our Sustainer of Life. Do we try to satisfy our spiritual hunger with the world’s cheap bread? Or do we feed on Christ – His life, His Word and His promises?
