Jesus refers to Himself as, “the Light of the world” in John 8:12, this is one of only three times the phrase is used in the new testament by Jesus. In Matthew 4:12-17 the author quotes Isaiah who prophesied about the coming Light: “The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light.” Jesus is the promised and prophesied Light that was to come to remove the darkness in the hearts of men and women.
In Genesis 1:3 God proclaimed over the world, “Let there be light”. God spoke light in the beginning, separating it from the darkness, and His creation would grow and flourish in that light. We know that plants cannot grow without the proper amount of light and in the same way God’s children cannot grow without the light shining into the darkness of our hearts. Jesus was and is the Light that God sent into the spiritual darkness of the world. He reveals the sin in our hearts and calls us to walk in the Light as He is in the Light. By this Light we are given new life and grow day by day into His image, through grace by faith and by the power of the Spirit.
