The Mission of the Church

OUTLINE

  • The Simplicity of the Mission

  • The Opposition to the Mission

  • The Beauty in the Mission

QUESTIONS:

  1. (Matthew 28:11-17) When Jesus gave the disciples their mission, they were up against multiple opposing factors; including, the very people they were called to reach and their own doubt. What are the fears, challenges, or difficulties you face in participating in this mission? What comforts will you have to sacrifice in participating in this mission?

  2. (Matthew 28:18) God is in control over all things, including how someone might respond to the gospel message of Jesus. How can this truth change the way we reach out to those who are far from Jesus?

  3. (Matthew 28:18, 20; Acts 1:8) God is in control over all things, including how someone might respond to the gospel message of Jesus. He also promises to be with us as we go out into the world. How should these two truths give us peace and confidence as we join God in the mission?

  4. (Matthew 28:18-20) The mission God gives us is fairly simple, beautiful, and often intimidating. Do you find yourself living as an everyday missionary where He has you? Who is one person you can begin praying for today who is far from Jesus? What step can you take towards pointing that person to Jesus?

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

Matthew 28:11-20

11Now while they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. 12And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, 13and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’ 14And if this should come to the governor’s ears, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble.” 15And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely spread among the Jews, and is to this day.

The Great Commission
16But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. 18And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
