John: Jesus is God - The Suffering Savior

QUESTIONS:

1. What stood out most from the passage?

2. (John 12:27-29) In this passage we see Jesus openly wrestle with the weight of His obedience. He knows He will suffer greatly but knows the purpose behind it and remains obedient. How does Jesus model for us what it means to suffer as Christians? What is the purpose of suffering?

3. (John 12:30-33) Our world is crushed and broken by sin. The term “judgment” in verse 31 is the Greek word “krisis”. It means a point of separation, decision, and trial. In the midst of our world in crisis, where do you find hope? What are you tempted to hope in besides Jesus, and how do you keep focused on the true hope found in Him alone?

4. (John 12:34-43) Jesus brings light in the midst of darkness. Sin blinds us from God’s truth, but following Jesus brings light and gives us the ability to see. In what ways does your sin blind you and how has Jesus brought light and healing to your life? What does it look like to let that light shine into the lives of others?

5. (John 12:44-50) In these last few verses, Jesus ends His public ministry with a reminder of His purpose, to glorify God by bringing fulfillment to the promise of eternal life. How does knowing that we have eternal life in Jesus change the way you live? How does this “eternal perspective” influence your decisions and shape your behavior? If it doesn’t, what would it look like to begin living with an “eternal perspective”?
