Luke: Focus on Jesus - The Plan of Proximity

May 25, 2025Jason SandersonLuke: Focus on JesusLuke 6:12-19

Notes Outline

OUTLINE:

  • Proximity to His Presence – Luke 6:12 “In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God.”
    • Jesus withdrew to be alone with the Father, modeling that intimacy with God precedes clarity in direction. The Father’s presence was sought in solitude, reminding us that divine guidance is found in a quiet relationship with God. Before calling others close, Jesus drew near to the Father.
  • Proximity to His People – Luke 6:13–16 “And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles...”
    • After being with the Father, Jesus moved toward people. He chose twelve to be with Him and carry His mission forward. These men came from radically different backgrounds, yet Jesus called them into shared community. Proximity to His people is where formation, purpose, and grace intertwine.
  • Proximity to His Power – Luke 6:17–19 “And the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.”
    • As people gathered around Jesus, His power was on display. Healing, restoration, and deliverance weren’t earned; they were experienced through nearness. The closer they got, the more they encountered His power. Proximity to Jesus heals both body and soul.

QUESTIONS:

  1. Where in your life do you need to slow down and draw near to Jesus in prayer before making a decision?
  2. Are you open to being part of a diverse, imperfect community that Jesus is shaping for His purpose?
  3. What might Jesus be trying to heal or restore in your life if you would simply draw closer to Him?
  4. How might your expectations of God’s plan be limiting your ability to trust in His presence and wisdom?
  5. Who in your life needs to experience Jesus through your presence, prayer, or pursuit of community?
