Luke: Follow Jesus - One Thing

QUESTIONS:

1. As you read through this passage what stands out to you the most? Why?
2. Luke chose to put this story right after the parable of the Good Samaritan. How does the contrast between “Go and do” (Good Samaritan) and “Sit and listen” (Mary) deepen our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus? (Luke 10:38)
3. Do you identify more with Martha or Mary in this passage? How do your circumstances, responsibilities, and season of life impact your relationship with Jesus? (Luke 10:39-40)
4. Our distracted and anxious lives often lead to relational brokenness. How did Martha’s anxiety impact her relationship with Jesus and her sister? Where have you seen busyness or misaligned priorities strain relationships with your spouse, children, coworkers, or friends? What role does sitting at Jesus’ feet play in restoring relational health? (Luke 10:40-41)
5. Martha was “distracted with much serving.” In your own life, what are the “many things” that tend to distract you from wholeheartedly following Jesus? (Luke 10:41-42)
6. Mary demonstrated her surrender to Jesus by sitting at His feet and choosing to be His disciple. Where is Jesus inviting you to surrender more fully to Him right now? What areas of your life are the hardest for you to release and trust Him with?
